Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance shares a lot of similarities with traditional health insurance, in that for exchange for a monthly premium, patients receive discounts on a wide variety of healthcare services. The big difference is that dental insurance is focused on prevention. Most plans are geared toward making routine treatments like checkups and cleanings easily affordable so policyholders can take care of minor issues early or avoid them altogether, leading to better oral health and lower care costs.

What Your Dental Insurance Covers

While no two dental insurance plans are exactly alike, the majority tend to follow this same basic framework:

  • Checkups, cleanings, X-rays, and other preventive services are covered 80-100%.

  • Fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, and other restorative services are covered 50-70%.

  • Veneers, whitening, and other cosmetic services are NOT covered because they are elective.

Just by keeping up with your two recommended checkups and cleanings each year, you’ll not only save as much as possible with your insurance, but you’ll also lower your risk of developing advanced problems that require more expensive treatments.
